Un “stative verb” o “state verb” es un verbo (estático o de estado) que describe un estado y no una acción. Estos verbos no pueden ser utilizados en tiempos continuos.  Por ejemplo, trabajar (work) es un verbo que podemos utilizar en tiempos como present continuous o past continuous ya que hablan de una acción pero el verbo gustar (like) describe un estado fijo que no cambia y no puede ser utilizado en un tiempo “continuous” o “progressive”.stative verbs en ingles

Estos stative verbs o verbos de estado usualmente son agrupados en los siguientes grupos:

Emoción: love, hate, want, need

Posesión: have, own, want, belong

Sentidos: see, hear, smell, seem

Pensamiento u opinon: know, believe, remember

Ejemplo:

Supongamos que quieren decirle al profesor que no recuerdan algo. Sabemos que para hablar de situaciones en el momento debemos usar el Present Continuous. Sin embargo la frase: “I am not remembering the word.” es INCORRECTA. Esto es porque el verbo “remember” es un verbo de estado o stative verb y no puede ser usado en ningun tiempo CONTINUOUS. La forma correcta es “I don’t remember the word”.
